Legend has it that, after losing his leg at Gettysburg, General Sickles had the medics who were carrying him off of the battle field go back and retrieve his leg. One witness wrote that he could be seen being carried off the field holding his leg and "coolly smoking a cigar". His leg was placed in a medical museum where he visited it several times.
