Recently, the government shutdown caused disruptions that I fear many among us cannot afford to experience again. During this unsettling time, I lost access to my Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits — commonly known as food stamps — which are indispensable for my everyday survival. This isn't just my story. It's the story of countless others whose wellbeing and survival hinge upon these essential services. The SNAP benefits are not a luxury; they are a lifeline for millions of Americans. According to the USDA, over 42 million Americans rely on these benefits, and during a shutdown, their already precarious circumstances become dire. Federal interruptions in services like SNAP not only compromise daily nutrition but also destabilize entire communities, pushing vulnerable individuals like myself into deeper poverty. This hardship extends to healthcare services, a critical area of concern for those of us who cannot work due to disability. Without steady healthcare support, our lives are continuously at risk, left to teeter on the precipice of uncertainty. According to the CDC, nearly 61 million adults in the United States live with a disability and countless of them, like myself, depend heavily on stable, uninterrupted healthcare services to manage our health and maintain some semblance of normalcy. We need actionable solutions to prevent such future disruptions that threaten our most basic human needs. I urge our lawmakers to take definitive steps to ensure that benefits like SNAP and healthcare services are protected from government shutdowns. One possible solution is to legislate emergency funding for essential services that would override any government impasse. This could ensure that basic sustenance and healthcare access are maintained without fail, even during administrative failures.
