The China Daily released a propaganda film attempting to criticise Sky News Australia journalist Sharri Markson over her coverage of the Wuhan lab leak theory.
In the video, which references news articles from The Guardian as evidence, Markson’s work was described as being a “conspiracy theory”.
The ABC’s Wendy Harmer tweeted a link to the article suggesting Markson would be responsible for World War 3, before deleting the tweet a few hours later.
ABC communications boss Nick Leys declined to say whether the tweet was a breach of social media policies or whether the ABC had asked Harmer to delete it.
The Guardian also declined to comment.
Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton said it was strange that Australian journalists would promote Chinese propaganda in a bid to attack one of our own journalists.
“Harmer, who is supposedly a journalist, was effectively demanding Markson self-censor one of the most important public interest stories for fear of upsetting the CCP,” he said.
“And then she is effectively blaming Markson for what she claimed would be a catalyst for World War 3.
“It was disgraceful alarmism and totally contradictory to everything journalism stands for. Not surprisingly, Harmer later deleted her tweet.”
