Lost in Super Intelligence
Tina Toon
Cartoon published 10/01/2026
We lead China in the AI race. For now. That’s the good news, and it is worth saying out loud before the robot starts waving its arms.
This week the White House sat the frontier bosses down for lunch and handed them a one-page accord on what the president is calling Super Intelligence. Google, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI signed. Internal controls. An outside auditor. A board committee that actually reads the report. Trump called it morally binding. Almost like a constitution, if a constitution came with a salad course and a promise to behave.
The point of the meeting was not a new agency. It was speed. Slow the models down and Beijing does not slow down with you. The room understood that. So did the man at the head of the table. Self-policing is the deal because a five-year international treaty would arrive after the race is already over.
Campy? Sure. The 1960s already wrote this episode. A shiny American machine, flags on the dome, and a smooth operator in the background trying to wire something into the back of it. Danger, Will Robinson. The difference is the robot was usually right.
China does not need to beat us in the lab if it can sit in the supply chain, the weights, or the back door. Spyware does not file a comment period. It just shows up one morning speaking Mandarin in the logs. That is the part the accord does not cartoon. Audits catch sloppy code. They do not catch a rival state that spent a decade treating our open models like a free buffet.
So yes — police yourselves. Build the controls. Name the committee. Keep the lead. Just don’t hand Dr. Smith the screwdriver and call it cooperation.
We will keep drawing it the way the old shows did. Loud. Obvious. And usually correct about the guy behind the robot.
