Beluga whale escapes research station and swims hundreds of kilometers back to her baby 😍
After months of permits and planning, a female beluga from Cook Inlet in Alaska was brought to a marine research station in Seward. Scientists were to study her recovery after giving birth there before she was to be released back into the wild. Her calf was already old enough to survive without milk, so the researchers deemed the timing safe. But they hadn't anticipated the aspects of motherhood that can't be quantified in charts. Staff reported that she spent her first days in the holding tank unusually calmly, repeatedly circling the same wall, almost as if memorizing the way out.
Then, before sunrise, cameras filmed her swimming from the research tank into the bay. Equipped with a transmitter, teams tracked her signal as she swam through open water and returned hundreds of kilometers to Cook Inlet. Days later, she was spotted near the same waters where her calf had last been seen. She swam alongside the young beluga, as if she'd never intended to leave him. Scientists hoped to learn more about the processes in a mother's body after giving birth, but what they learned instead was much harder to quantify: Motherly love doesn't end with the end of milk production.
