What’s wild isn’t that platforms censor.
It’s that people now censor themselves, and don’t even notice it.
We change words. We soften language. We add asterisks. We say “unalived” instead of murder. We twist “vaccine” into code. We filter ourselves before anyone else has to.
Why are people doing this?
Because reach is controlled. Visibility is monetized. And we’ve been trained to chase both.
Platforms don’t even need to silence you anymore. They just tweak distribution.
“Speech, not reach.”
And suddenly:
• People rewrite their thoughts.
• People avoid certain topics.
• People sanitize their tone.
• People self-correct mid-sentence.
Not because it’s illegal. Not because it’s violent. Not because it’s harmful.
But because it might not perform.
That’s the part that should bother you.
When the incentive structure changes language, language changes culture.
And when we start doing the filtering for them? They don’t have to do anything at all.
