Separation of Church and State Its Original Intent The Pilgrims Understood the Danger Many of the Pilgrims fled England because the State had taken control over the Church. They had seen what happened when rulers claimed power over worship, doctrine, and conscience. That is why they advocated separation of Church and State when they came to America. They believed government had no right to compel religion, plant churches by force, or punish people into submission to ecclesiastical authority. Their concern was not public faith. Their concern was State-controlled faith. They wanted religious liberty because they understood that true worship cannot be coerced. REMEMBER. Forced religion is not biblical faith. Independence. Freedom. Liberty.RIFL Society@RiflSociety2026
