Separation of Church and State Its Original Intent What Did “Separation of Church and State” Really Mean? Today, “separation of Church and State” is often used to argue that faith should be removed from public life. But historically, the phrase had a very different purpose. It was not designed to silence Christians, erase God from the public square, or force religious expression into private life only. Its purpose was to prevent the State from controlling the Church. The concern was not that faith would influence public life. The concern was that government would intrude into matters of conscience, worship, doctrine, and religious practice. The original intent was protection, not prohibition. REMEMBER. Separation was meant to restrain government, NOT Silence God. RIFL Society @RiflSociety2026
