There Is a Creator The first tenet of American Exceptionalism is simple but powerful: There is a Creator. The Declaration of Independence openly recognizes that our rights are not created by kings, courts, legislatures, or public opinion. They come from a higher authority. George Washington said it was the duty of nations to acknowledge Almighty God, obey His will, and seek His protection and favor. John Adams warned that the safety and prosperity of nations ultimately depend on the blessing and protection of Almighty God. The Founders understood that limited government begins when government admits there is an authority higher than itself. A nation that forgets God eventually gives government His place.
