ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: February 12, 1909 On 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth,
African-American Republicans and women’s suffragists Ida Wells and Mary
Terrell co-found the NAACP . Ida B. Wells-Barnett (L) and Mary
Church Terrell (R). Both women were prominent African American
journalists and activists. Both were founding members of the NAACP and
active in NAWSA. Among their many achievements, Wells-Barnett
established the Alpha Suffrage Club of Chicago, while Terrell was the
first president of the National Association of Colored Women.
