The New Jim Crow, arguably the most influential book on criminal justice in recent decades, and *extremely* influential among Obama-era dems, argues that after the civil-rights era dismantled explicit Jim Crow segregation, America rebuilt its racial hierarchy through the criminal-justice system. The modern felony label, the author says, was effectively repurposed to keep many of the same old barriers in place, housing, jobs, votin, just under a new, race-neutral disguise
This book wasn't some fringe theory. It was massively influential among professors, legislators, and local judges. Because of it, and other similar activist agitprop, we now have a crop of democrats who truly in their heart of hearts believe that the American criminal justice system is a corrupt, racist institution that needs to be undermined or even dismantled at every chance. You wonder why it's so common to read stories about violent (black) criminals getting slaps on the wrist? You can thank books like this, which claim that putting a POC into the criminal justice system would in fact be an *injustice*
So, when Dems say "um, we don't actually want to 'abolish the police', that's a fringe take," remember that many, many of them believe a whole suite of ideas that imply that yes, abolishing the police would be moral, just thing to do
