Astronaut Poop to Protein: The Future of Space Food?”
Scientists are working on something that sounds pretty gross but might be essential if we ever want to send humans deep into space — turning astronaut poop into food. Researchers from Pennsylvania State University have come up with a system that uses microbes to quickly break down human waste and convert it into a type of edible paste. It’s a bit like eating Marmite or Vegemite, only made from “microbial goo” instead of yeast.
Here’s how it works: the team used artificial poop mixed with special microbes in a sealed, oxygen-free tube, setting off a process called anaerobic digestion (the same kind of process happening in your gut right now). This breaks the waste down into simpler compounds, including methane. Then, another type of microbe, Methylococcus capsulatus — which is already used to make animal feed — feeds on the methane and turns it into a biomass that’s about 52% protein and 36% fat. The scientists even grew other helpful microbes under hot, alkaline conditions to keep harmful pathogens away, making the final product safer to eat.
During tests, they managed to remove nearly 60% of solid waste in just 13 hours — way faster than current space waste systems. While the technology still needs a lot more work, it could be a huge deal for missions to Mars or beyond. Packing enough meals for such a trip would make rockets too heavy and costly. Hydroponics is another option, but plants take a long time to grow and need a lot of energy. In the end, recycling our own waste might be the only realistic way to stay fed far from Earth.
