What is a witness? Simply put, a witness is evidence for a case. We are continually taught that a witness must be a person. That is not true. Now you are prepared to investigate this portion of the prophecy armed with sanctified common sense. The Lord gives power to these witnesses to “preach” for 1,260 years, in symbolic sackcloth, a type of Israel in mourning. The word “witness” here is the same word that John uses in Chapter 17, verse 6 (martus or martyrs). In Chapter 17, John said that the woman (harlot church) had made herself drunk on the blood of the martyrs. We are presented with the same group of people, but we’re given the time in which the woman has to drink their blood (persecuted them unto death): it was for 1,260 years. Let’s see who these witnesses are according to the Bible. The reason that we have two witnesses is because it is written in the Mosaic law that “at the mouth of two witnesses. . . . . . shall the matter be established” (Deuteronomy 19:15; 2 Corinthians 13:1). The two witnesses are The Word of God (symbolized by the two olive trees) and the true Church (symbolized by the two candlesticks). In the Book of Zechariah chapter 4, verses 1-4, 11-14, we have two olive trees shown supplying oil to one candlestick. This oil lights the candlestick. In Revelation chapter 1, verse 20, the Lord revealed to John that a candlestick represents a church. Applying the revelation to Zechariah’s prophecy, we have the Old Testament church in Israel as a candlestick. Acts 7:38 states, “This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness…” A church cannot exist without being fed by the Word of God. Now, why does the one candlestick in Zechariah become two candlesticks in the Book of Revelation and form one of the witnesses? Answer: The New Testament Church is the second candlestick. Yet both of these form one witness. Remember in Acts, Jesus said, “Ye are my witnesses.” The Church of the Old Covenant and the New Covenant are seen by God as one witness throughout the ages. In Zechariah’s vision the two olive trees were present and were supplying oil to the Old Testament Church. In this vision, the olive trees represented the two major segments of the Old Testament, the law and the prophets. When Paul was in Rome, it was said of him that “there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets. . . . .” (Acts 28:23) These olive trees are now symbolic of the prophets of the Old Testament and the apostles of the New Testament. Therefore, the second witness must be the Bible. 5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies; and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. Fire Proceedeth Out Of Their Mouth: By the use of this phrase, the reader is informed of the authority that these witnesses possess. In Jeremiah we read, “Wherefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.” (Jer. 5:14) “For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again” (Matt. 7:2) History contains many illustrations of the fulfillments of these two verses. The nations of Europe such as France and Spain, who persecuted the Christians and their Scriptures (by burning the Word of God), felt the awful judgements of revolutions and wars much more intensely than those nations who turned to the truth of the Bible during the Reformation. 13 And the same hour there was a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven. In the visions of the Revelation, earthquakes are consistently interpreted to be the great political upheavals. Certainly the Reformation was one of the major earthquakes of all time. The effects of this earthquake caused one tenth of a great city to fall away. In Revelation 17:18, Rome (as a spiritual empire) is identified as that great city. England was the first nation to break away from Rome’s European spiritual city. This is the fulfillment of the verse which states, “and the tenth part of the city fell.” In Horae Apocalypticae (Pt. III, page 467-457) Elliot interprets this verse with unmatched scholastic genius. He proves that the word “thousands” is properly interpreted chiliads, meaning provinces or counties. It is important to see how simply and beautifully history falls into proper perspective with this enlightenment. We look for seven chiliads of the papal city to break away about the time England (one tenth of the city) rebels. The Union of Utrecht formed these seven chiliads that fell away. These are the seven provinces (“thousands” KJV) that fell away as a result of the Reformation: HOLLAND, ZEALAND, UTRECHT, FREISELAND, GRONINGEN, OVERYSSEL, and GUIDERLAND. The Revelation is not a mystery; it is a revelation.
