ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: July 10, 1888 Hazel Abel was born, first woman elected U.S. Senator from Nebraska Graduating from University of Nebraska at Lincoln,
she rose from teacher to high school principal. Later endeavors included
treasurer of a construction company.After
attending many state GOP conventions, the party named Abel vice chair.
November 1954, she won a two-month vacancy in the U.S. Senate. Her goal
was to allow voters to express their approval of a woman in government. Two years after leaving office, Abel contested on the TV show To Tell the Truth.
President Eisenhower named her to a White House Conference on
Education. She founded the Nebraska Federation of Republican Women and
