    Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1824. Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836. Texas became a state of the United States in 1845. Mexico & the USA went to war with each from 1846 to 1848. We kicked Mexico's butt.

    As part of the peace treaty signed by both countries, Mexico ceded the northern half of its territory to the USA in exchange for $15 million. This was the same price we paid France in 1803 for the Louisiana territory.
