It’s time for Republicans to address the issue of race more directly. They should highlight that, both in principle and practice, the Republican Party has a better track record on race than the Democrats. More importantly, they need to emphasize that, when it comes to the issues that most affect African Americans today, the Democratic position embodies a form of patronizing racism that is just as harmful as the old racism of Jim Crow and segregation. Republicans played a significant role in the following Civil Rights legislation: 1. The Emancipation Proclamation 2. The 13th Amendment 3. The 14th Amendment 4. The 15th Amendment 5. The Reconstruction Act of 1867 6. The Civil Rights Act of 1866 7. The Enforcement Act of 1870 8. The Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 9. The Civil Rights Act of 1875 10. The Freedmen's Bureau 11. The Civil Rights Act of 1957 12. The Civil Rights Act of 1960 13. The United States Civil Rights Commission By acknowledging these contributions, Republicans can engage in a more meaningful conversation about race and its impact on society today.
