Bina West Miller, visionary Republican Entrepreneur Bina West
Miller, born near Detroit, May 18th 1867. At first a teacher, in 1892
she founded a life insurance company for women. Until then, high
mortality risk had left them without this means of financial security.
Within a decade, the Woman's Life Insurance Society had one hundred
thousand clients.
This farsighted entrepreneur was a lifelong Republican. President Coolidge praised her at a Republican Women Conference.
Miller was Michigan GOP Vice Chair as well as National Committeewoman.
She delivered a nominating speech for the GOP’s 1928 national
convention, then served on Herbert Hoover’s Planning Committee on Child
Health and Protection. A newspaper named her the state’s top
businesswoman, and the Associated Press called her "one of the five
