Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party reposted
Pirate Wires@PirateWiresMay 6
Exclusive report: A bipartisan group of lawmakers is urging the DoD, Commerce Department, and FCC to investigate the Chinese robotics firm Unitree, which it says is currently allowed to operate at American prisons, police forces, and military sites in the U.S.
The committee’s letter claims that Unitree robots:
• Come pre-installed with a covert backdoor that connects to servers in China, allowing “anyone with access to the API key [to] tunnel into a robot, stream video, or access systems via SSH — using default credentials”
• Store user data in China, where it is subject to China’s intelligence and cybersecurity laws (Unitree’s own privacy policy confirms the data is stored in the PRC)
• Record voice data using iFlytek, a company sanctioned by the U.S. for mass surveillance
More: The letter claims Unitree is developing the robots for military purposes. Though Unitree denies selling its robots to China’s People’s Liberation Army, the company’s B1 quadrupedal robot was outfitted with an assault rifle during recent joint PLA–Cambodia military exercises, which Chinese state TV showed firing during the event.
