Adam Schiff financed a home in Potomac, Maryland, purchased in 2003 for $610,000, and claimed it as his “principal residence” on mortgage documents. The home, now valued at over $1.4 million according to Zillow, was designated as his primary residence in the original 2003 mortgage and during refinancings in 2009, 2010, and 2013. Each time, Schiff and his wife signed documents under penalty of perjury asserting the Maryland property as their primary residence, with a clause requiring occupancy for 12 consecutive months. Notably, the 2009 refinancing document has “Principal Residence” written in pen on the front page. However, Schiff’s campaign has stated that his primary residence is in Burbank, California, and the Maryland home was listed as a primary residence for loan purposes to distinguish it from a vacation property. At the same time, Schiff claimed a homeowner’s tax exemption on a 650-square-foot condo in Burbank, California, also designating it as his primary residence, which provided a $7,000 reduction in his property tax assessment (about $70 in annual savings). He did not take a similar exemption on the Maryland home. Real estate law experts have suggested Schiff is likely not in legal jeopardy, but the dual residency claims have raised questions, particularly given his long representation of California in Congress and his 2024 Senate campaign.
