For those who wish to dispute the assertion of AIDS being the Gay Plague of 25 to 45 years ago, I call your attention to Gaetan Dugas, aka Patient Zero, the French Canadian flight attendant who was credited by the AMA with bringing HIV from Africa to North America.

Gaetan estimated that he had sex with upwards of 250 different men in Africa or North America, each & every year, for the ~10 years that he worked for Canadian Airlines. Dugas died in 1984, at the age of 32, from kidney failure secondary to AIDS related infections.

And even if Gaetan Dugas was not Patient Zero, there was a plethora of other homosexual men who could have easily taken his place. Estimates at the time were that more than 1/5th of all gay men had engaged in anal sex with over 500 other gay men.
