When did the bird flu hit the United States?
The H5N1 avian influenza virus, also known as bird flu, was first detected in the United States in January 2022.
Timeline
January 2022: The first H5N1 virus was detected in wild birds in the United States.
February 2022: The first H5N1 outbreak in commercial poultry was detected in turkeys.
April 2022: The first human case of H5N1 was reported in the United States.
March 2024: The first multi-state outbreak of H5N1 in dairy cows was reported.
Spread of the virus
The H5N1 virus has spread globally, affecting humans, livestock, and wildlife. In the United States, the virus has primarily infected farm workers who were in direct contact with infected poultry or dairy cattle.
Current situation
As of February 15, 2025, nearly 70 people in the United States have been infected with H5N1, and there has been one fatality.

As of September 2024, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) is present in dairy herds in 14 states, including California. There are also outbreaks in commercial and backyard poultry flocks in California.
States with dairy herd infections
California, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Ohio.
Outbreaks in California
In November 2024, HPAI was detected in commercial and backyard flocks in Kings, Fresno, and San Joaquin counties.
In August 2024, HPAI was confirmed in a dairy cow in Central California.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) monitors for HPAI infections in California herds.
Human cases
As of February 13, 2025, the United States has recorded 68 human cases of avian flu, with one death in a man from Louisiana.
The CDC believes the immediate risk to the general public from H5 bird flu remains low. However, people with exposure to infected animals are at higher risk of infection.
Other information
In March 2024, HPAI A(H5N1) virus infections were reported for the first time in goat kids on a farm.
In April 2024, a person in the United States tested positive for HPAI H5N1 bird flu for the first time.
