Between 1946 & 1972, the US dollar lost half of its value. However, at the same time, average annual income increased from 3K to 12K. The net result was that the average American had twice the buying power in 1972 as they did in 1946.

Between 1973 & 1981, the US dollar lost half of its value again. But at the same time, average annual income increased from 12K to 22K. The net result was that the average American had only 90% of the buying in 1981 as they did in 1973.
