In order for mass transit to work, you must have a mass of people in need of transportation. If you have to drive to the train stop before you get on the train, & then drive to wherever you're going after you get off the train, the train is pointless.

I grew up in New York City. I took the uptown train to high school for 4 years. And then I took the downtown train to college for 2 years. I walked ~3 quarters of a mile to the train station. And then I walked another ~1 quarter to 1 half of a mile after I got off. No car driving was needed.

New York City has ~250 miles of subway/elevated line. And there are ~500 train stations scattered along the way. So then, on average, you walk half a mile to get to the station. Take the train as long as necessary. And finally walk another half a mile to get to your destination.

‌ Using LA as the "hub' - San Diego is ~125 miles to the south - Las Vegas is ~250 miles to the east - San Francisco is ~400 miles to the north. Express trains going non-stop at 100 mph into or out of LA still only make sense if you are leaving from, &/or going to, 1 of those 4 cities.

‌ From September of 1967 to September of 1970 I was between 10 & 13 y/o & in grammar school; more specifically 5th, 6th, & 7th grade. It was only 2 blocks from my house. And so I walked to school from K to 8. Came home for lunch each day too because it was that close. Never took a school ... View More
