Gladys Pyle,
born in South Dakota, October 4th 1890. After college, she taught at
various high schools. Her father was a Republican state attorney
general, her mother a prominent suffragist.
Pyle became
South Dakota’s first woman state representative in 1923 and first woman
secretary of state in 1927. Next, a Republican governor named her to the
securities commission. November 1938, she won a U.S. Senate vacancy,
