ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:January 04, 1812 Daniel Morris, anti-slavery Republican Congressman born near Rochester This anti-slavery activist entered politics with the Free Soil Party. He studied law and served as county prosecutor. Morris chaired the county GOP and won election to the state house. Outbreak of civil war, he encouraged local Democrats to oppose the Confederacy. In 1862, he won first of two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Receiving his vote were the 13th and 14th Amendments, the Freedmen’s Bureau, the 1866 Civil Rights Act, and the Reconstruction Act.
