Christmas was celebrated as a Yuletide festival with carols and Nativity plays being banned in 1938. Easter was observed as the celebration of spring instead of the risen Christ. Crosses could not be displayed in schools or on public property. Private schools were abolished and only public schools remained with textbooks promoting Nazi ideology.
