MINNESOTA SLAVE STATE

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY August 29, 2023 Republicans prevented Democrats from making Minnesota a Slave State Grand Old Partisan congratulates the GOP for preserving freedom in Minnesota. As statehood approached, the territory had to decide whether to ban slavery. July 1857, a convention gathered at the capitol building to write a constitution.The fifty-nine Republican delegates wanted to ban slavery and allow for Blacks voting, while the fifty-five Democrat delegates wanted to permit slavery and prevent Blacks from voting. A prominent Democrat newspaper endorsed "White Supremacy Against Negro Equality." Feuding became so heated that a former Democrat governor physically attacked a Republican judge. After weeks of wrangling, the two sides reached a compromise. Slavery would be banned (a Republican win) but there would be no guarantee that Blacks could vote (a Republican loss). Delegates approved the document on August 29th. It was ratified in October, followed by admittance to the Union in May.
