    When I lived in New York & took the subway to work, I often carried extra food with me to give to panhandlers instead of money. Most of the time they were glad to get it, even if it was only a piece of fruit or a candy bar.

    Now that I'm retired & live in Florida, I sometimes take a some food with me, just in case I encounter a panhandler cruising between cars that are stopped for a red light. They never are happy to get a piece of fruit or a candy bar instead of cash.
