OBAMA THE GREAT DIVIDER 1) Dividing Americans By Class 2) Dividing Americans By Race & Ethnicity 3) Dividing Americans By Gender During the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama pledged to end the type of politics that “breeds division and conflict and cynicism,” and to help Americans “rediscover our bonds to each other and to get out of this constant petty bickering that’s come to characterize our politics.” He then proceeded to become the most divisive president in American history. Not only has he emphasized the need to enact his agendas swiftly and with a great sense of urgency, but he has depicted his political opponents as essentially obstructionists whose ideological absolutism is at odds with the common good. During his second inaugural address on January 21, 2013, for instance, the newly re-elected Obama said: “For now, decisions are upon us and we cannot afford delay.
