— "A top US official on Tuesday described President Vladimir Putin’s accusations that Russia had been threatened by the West as justification for invading Ukraine as “absurdity.”

    Ukraine was under pressure/promise to join NATO, which Putin had opposed for many years. He wanted to negotiate a reasonable agreement that would keep NATO off his doorstep, but nobody would listen. They're listening now, between shell hits.
