According to Mark Mills of the Manhattan Institute, “During the past two decades, global governments have spent over $5 trillion to avoid using fossil fuels. But oil, natural gas, and coal still supply 84% of global energy, just two percentage points lower than 20 years ago.”
Solar and wind energy are unreliable, so they need to be backed up by another energy source, usually natural gas in the U.S.. So, any so-called “affordability” that comes with wind and solar is built on the affordability of natural gas.
As Alex Epstein of the Center for Industrial Progress puts it, “the more solar+wind a grid uses the more expensive its electricity tends to be.” Germany saw huge increases in household electricity prices with only a portion of their grid relying on wind and solar. And, California’s prices run far ahead of the rest of the U.S.
