The SR 71 Air Force Pilots and RSO that were selected to fly the SR 71s were carefully screened to make sure that their egos were not so big that they would use this valuable asset as a toy. Only one man that I’ve ever heard of was irresponsible. I grew up at Beale Air Force Base. My father was an RSO in all of my neighbors were either Pilots, RSO‘s or men that worked in support of the SR 71.. I want to clarify how outstanding these men were, responsible, intelligent, and talented. They didn’t try to exceed any limits and they never broke any rules. That said, the SR 71 could go a little faster than this; it was usually unnecessary when it could get the job done at a lower speed. Written by Linda Sheffield Miller c@
