Ex-Soviet countries have a holiday called Victory Day on May 9th. It commemorates the defeat of the Third Reich.
9 years ago yesterday, Vladislav's body was found - beaten to death by the thugs he'd been celebrating Victory Day with. It turned out that their 'patriotism' was offended by homosexuality - though not, apparently, by the fact that one of the thugs was a literal Nazi.
