The fifth-generation F-35C Lightning II fighter crashed while landing on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson nuclear aircraft carrier. The incident took place on January 24 in the South China Sea. The pilot successfully ejected. 7 sailors received injuries of varying severity, three required hospitalization. The disaster was the first for this type of fighter, the planned deployment of which is underway in the US Navy.
