On February 23, a Mexican force numbering in the thousands, led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, attempted to retake the fortress. The ensuing battle—lasting 13 days—is known today as the Battle of the Alamo.The defenders of the Alamo—numbering around 200 men—held their ground knowing full well they would not survive. By the time the battle had ended, they had made their mark on history. This small force of brave men held out for nearly two weeks. They inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers—killing between 600 and 1,600 Mexican soldiers.The Battle of the Alamo became a symbol of resistance for Texans. From that battle was born a rallying cry—a call for independence and a reminder of a heroic fight for freedom—that today has become famous around the world. On April 21, 1836, Sam Houston and some 800 Texans engaged and defeated Santa Anna’s remaining Mexican force of 1,500 men. As the Texans rushed forward, calls of “Remember the Alamo!” could be heard across the battlefield.Today our nation can be inspired by Texas's struggle for independence. The fighting spirit of the Alamo defenders is alive and well in America. We are a nation of freedom fighters—bound together by a history and a heritage unlike any other in the world. We are brothers and sisters born into freedom, living in freedom, and dying as we have lived—free.Today we once again find our country locked in a struggle. Not a struggle for independence, but a struggle to retain our liberty and to defend the freedoms secured for us by patriots of generations past. We fight outnumbered against numerous foreign adversaries, and against those in our own land seeking to shackle us in the chains of socialism. But fighting outnumbered is nothing new to American patriots.That fighting spirit—born in our Revolutionary War and put on full display at the Alamo—is alive and well today. It is alive in each and every patriot that stands up for our nation and our collective liberties. This patriotic sentiment—known as the spirit of 1776—is an attitude of self-determination and individual liberty unique to Americans.It is this fighting spirit that gives power to the words of some of our most famous patriots. Words that today motivate our citizens and warriors, alike. "Give me liberty, or give me death!" "Don't tread on me!" And of course, "Remember the Alamo!" These iconic statements are a vocalization of the yearning to be free and a willingness to fight for that freedom.
