A modern strategy for addressing the threats we now confront must be conceptually similar to Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative and draw from the lessons it conveyed. It must also maintain the sufficiency of our triad and apply technologically advanced answers to the array of new threats we face.

After the failed Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Putin had to learn during his time in the KGB that it is one thing to invade a country, and quite another to maintain permanent control over it; especially in a country as large as Ukraine. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan lasted 9 years, in which the Soviets lost approximately 15,000 men, thousands ended up maimed and/or mentally disturbed, and more than 800,000 former veterans were literally abandoned, after the fall of the former USSR; in fact, from this group emerged the now feared Russian mafia. What was never in the minds of the Soviet leaders was the national identity of the Afghans, their iron will to defend their homeland to the death and the implications of guerrilla warfare. And so, the former USSR lost the war and those 9 years of invasion meant enormous economic costs.
Interestingly, today Russia stumbles over the same stone again. Putin, as happened with the Soviet leaders, did not understand the identity of the Ukrainian people either. The first thing he should have understood is that the Ukrainians are not Russians and that Ukraine has been an ancient and independent nation for more than 1000 years; KYIV was an important metropolis and cultural center, when Moscow was not even a village. For most of these more than a thousand years, KYIV was not ruled by Moscow, nor were they part of the same political entities. For centuries, KYIV pointed to the West and was part of a union with Lithuania and Poland, until they were conquered by the Tsarist Empire. But even after that, the Ukrainian people remained separate. This is important to understand, because that is what is at stake in this war.
The main issue in this war, at least for President Putin, is that in his fantasy Ukraine has never been a nation, it was always part of Russia, and the Ukrainians are Russians who desperately want to return to the motherland, being the only impediment, a cupular group that controls power, and whom Putin labels as Nazis, even though the President is Jewish. Curious this from a Jewish Nazi!
And in this crazy fantasy, Putin believed that he would invade Ukraine, President Zelenskyy would uproot Europe or the US, his government would fall, the Ukrainian army would surrender, and the Ukrainian people would welcome Russian tanks, throwing flowers at them like the French did when they were freed from Nazism by Allied troops. But this fantasy has already been absolutely shattered: President Zelenskyy not only did not start from Ukraine, but directly leads the Ukrainian troops, becoming a great leader, at a time when the world absolutely lacks true leaders; the Ukrainian army fights hard with the Russian forces; and the Ukrainian people do not throw flowers at Russian tanks, but Molotov cocktails.
After a month of invasion that, according to Ukrainian sources, has already cost the lives of about 12,000 Russian soldiers (in a single month, almost the same number of victims as in 9 years of invading Afghanistan), Russia is losing the war Because Putin must have already understood that he will never be able to subjugate the Ukrainian people.
The final cost of Putin's fantasy is not yet known, but it is easy to imagine what all the economic measures that Western nations have adopted against Russia will mean. But, furthermore, if in his obstinacy Putin prolongs the war, the direct disbursement of the scarce resources that Russia will have left to maintain its army in Ukraine, will lead the country to a serious economic crisis, a crisis that Russian citizens will end up paying for. , who not only do not support war with Ukraine, but do not share Putin's fantasy. The most conservative estimates indicate that in a month of invasion, Russia has already spent more than US$10,000 million.
Yes, Putin has already lost the war in Ukraine, because he will never be able to control the extensive territory of Ukraine, nor bend the will of his people. However, the war in Ukraine will have strong repercussions in the rest of the world. We have already seen that Germany decided to double its military budget and I have no doubt that each and every European nation will follow; and, hopefully not, a new arms race will begin in the developed world.
