We both know what lies ahead. So to start, I want to take you to task for saying that you will soon be having to make the biggest decision you have ever made concerning getting the economy going again. In truth, you are going to be making the biggest decision any President has ever had to make. FDR's decision: Commit a battered fleet in an attempt to rescue the Phillippines or let the Phillippines go while we conserve our resources and continue building out to eventually meet the enemy at the time and place of our choosing. Child's play Truman's decisions: Test a weapon that his top scientists could not assure him wouldn't set the entire world on fire and than deploy that weapon in hopes that it would save millions of lives. Than, later, sack the world's greatest General, Douglas MacArthur (at least in MacArthur's mind) in the middle of a war because he got a little too mouthy. Again, child's play. Next, there's this whole "Light at the end of the tunnel" thing. All we know for sure is that we are in a tunnel. Sometime the light we see is indeed the end of the tunnel but at this point (500K confirmed cases of CV-19, less than .2% of the population) I'd be more inclined to think it is a train bearing down on us. A good time to stop and listen. Again, to stress, we have less that .2% of the population who can no longer be infected and this is not going to be over until somewhere close to the 95% (or 60% or 75% depending on who is voicing an opinion) level when herd immunity puts paid to the issue. Ok, enough said. So where does that leave us. In the fight of our lives. .......... I spoke to my younger brother last night. He lives in a state where the governor is talking about throwing the economy back open, that things were not as bad as had been previously forcast. I tried to come up with a simple explaination about what he was seeing and this is what I came up with. This thing started out with one infected person. Think of him as having a six-shooter. He fires his six shots, hitting 6 people and so on and so on. At some point, everybody ran into the castle except the warriors, reducing the number of people who could be infected (too many shooters would overwelm the Warriers). Those who had been hit eventually resolve and either expire or are able to join the warriors in the defence of the castle, but when they rejoin the defence, they are bulletproof. Thus begins the march to herd immunity. Unfortunately, the castle cannot hold out forever, people have to be able to venture outside to bring in the harvest and replant. This can be addressed with Convelescent Plasma which allows those who are bulletproof to knit bulletproof vests for others, be they other warriers or those who need to venture outside in support of the castle. In this story, Commercial Plasma become the friendly dragon. So, let's look at the state of Commercial Plasma. First off, I'm going to take myself to task for feeding you bad with bad numbers in my previous communications. I was basing my estimate of 300 plasma centers with 30 machines each on an extrapolation of old information. It appears as though CSL itself has 280 or so plasma centers in the United States and that, along with the other Commercial Plasma companies there are closer to 770 plasma centers in the United States. https://www.cslplasma.com/center/nj https://www.donatingplasma.org/donation/find-a-donor-center ......... Continuing with the numbers of the previous estimates with perhaps 30 units per center (there has to be a minimum where it would no longer be economical to support a center) running 20 hours per day, we come up with 462,000 donations per day. If each donation could provide 3 prophalactic or therapeutic innoculations, that would be 1,386,000 innoculations per day. Problem is, this would also require an estimated 1,386,000 certified donors. Counting back 24 days from today, there were only around 10,442 confirmed cases in the entire country, many will have fallen and others will not be suitable to donate. Solution to this is time. As I write this, there have been over 550,000 confirmed cases in the United States, Counting forward 24 days (10 days to resolve, 14 days to recover) we will be looking at a meaningfull number of donors. Up till now, I have been stressing the use of CP to provide therapy for the afflicted and protection to healthcare and supporting community. This could be accomplished quite nicely with the available plasma being packaged in 250 ml IV bags for infusion. Now, we need a new tactic. We need concentrated plasma antibodies packaged in those 10ml (or 20ml or whatever) glass bottles that you can stick a syringe needle in (ampules). We will refer to this, along with the appropriate syringe and needle ready for innoculation, as a Plasma Antibody Kit or PAK. The ampules, well, that's what Commercial Plasma does for a living. Time to poke the dragon in the arse with a sharp stick, make sure it's awake. Than, we need to make sure it is well fed with sufficient supplies for the work ahead. One last point about Commercial Plasma before we move on. Commercial Plasma batches their plasma for processing. Since it looks like we have a bit of difference between West Coast and East Cost CV-19, Commercial Plasma can take 500 Units of each, mix them, and produce a PAK effective against both. ........... Now, on to testing. The active case tests, including the 15 minute test are great for surveilance, diagnosis and tracking. Other than that, they're so much bull scat. I go in, get tested and 15 minutes later someone who is infected coughs on me. The key is going to be the anti-body tests. That's the one that has to be gotten right because it pairs with our PAK's which is a topic I'll cover in my next correspondance. I had better close this out. Please know this. If things get dark enough that you are sitting with your head in your hands weeping, though seperated by half a continent and 6 feet or so, that hand you feel on your shoulder is mine, praying that the Lord take whatever strength I have and give it to you to carry on the fight.
