Now They Kill Them. Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" (1962), which is regarded as having been responsible for the popularization of the environmentalist movement, was based on purported threats to raptors (birds) caused by egg shell thinning purportedly resulting from the use of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) to kill mosquitoes. The book led to the prohibition of DDT, which led to malaria annually killing millions of (mostly poor) people in the third world. More recent long-term scientific studies have shown that DDT does not cause cancer in humans, which is one of the disproved reasons Carson misguidedly opposed its use in 1962. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not repealed its prohibition of DDT, and it is still not being used in Africa, where the malarial death toll has reached tens of millions of people over the last 50 years. (Inapt comparisons to the Holocaust are common, but in this case the death toll caused by environmentalists literally dwarfs that of the Nazis' Holocaust of the Jews.) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reports that malaria is the single greatest killer of children worldwide. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation makes a big deal out of its donation of huge sums of money to make mosquito nets available in malarial zones, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. But its impact is negligible when compared with the effects DDT use could achieve. DDT could, would and before its prohibition did practically eliminate malaria. It is the height of irony that poor, black African children are dying in their millions to feed the egos of the Western environmentalist movement, which started from a desire to save raptor birds (e.g., swifts, hawks, falcons and eagles), which are now being killed in their thousands each year by wind turbines, which are the latest environmentalist fetish. Thousands of birds are also roasted alive each year in mid-air by solar farms (another environmentalist fetish) such as Ivanpah. The Western enviromentalist movement has also opposed nuclear power, despite it being carbon neutral. It is capable of safely providing electricity to the world, if only enviromentalists would stop demanding its elimination. France generates most of its electricity from nuclear power and has never had a mishap. The recent problems with the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan were due to it being an antiquated technology that depended on pumps to replenish the water for cooling, instead of using gravity. The plant was hit by a tsunami and suffered a hydrogen explosion that disabled the cooling system. Had a gravity-fed water cooling system been built, there would have been no problems. But enviromentalists tell us falsely that nuclear power is dangerous. The U.S. has a massive underground storage facility at the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository in Nevada, which sits mostly empty. It is a testament to the wasteful effectiveness of idiotic enviromentalist opposition. This all goes to demonstrate that the environmentalist movement is simply a cover for Marxists to impose market controls with which to exert power for political purposes, and not to actually save anyone or anything in particular. Keep that in mind the next time you hear about the latest efforts of purportedly caring environmentalists (e.g., banning plastic straws). They have a lot of blood on their hands, from both humans and animals. Malthusians like Paul Ehrlich, who wrote "The Population Bomb" (1968), go from one end-of-the-world scenario to another [e.g., DDT (1960s), anthropogenic (aerosol caused) global cooling (1970s), acid rain (1980s), deforestation (1990s), anthropogenic (carbon dioxide caused) global warming (2000s), etc., etc., ad nauseum, ad infinitum] without missing a beat, and never being held to account for the massive death toll that results from their Chicken Little "the sky is falling" routine. The common feature that runs through all of these propaganda-driven panic episodes is that they are all attributable to Western civilization, and they can only be remediated by exerting controls on Western economies.
