Before he became a legend, Corporal Clifford Wooldridge was just a blue-collar kid from Washington who wanted to kick in doors and fight for something bigger than himself.
On June 18, 2010, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan—he got his wish. Wooldridge’s convoy was ambushed by 250 Taliban fighters firing from fortified mountain bunkers. Two of their Humvees were already gone—blown apart by IEDs—and the valley lit up with RPGs, PKMs, and DShKs.
Instead of breaking, Clifford snapped.
With zero backup, he grabbed his M249 SAW, flanked the enemy position completely alone, and unleashed such heavy fire that the Taliban scattered. And when he ran out of ammo? He beat the last fighter to death with the butt of his machine gun.
For his actions that day, he received the Navy Cross, the second-highest award for combat valor in the United States.
This is the true story of Clifford the Big Red Devil Dog—and how one pissed-off Marine became a one-man wrecking crew.
