US Congresswoman LaMonica McIver has been charged with alleged misconduct towards law enforcement.
McIver’s charges follow her confrontation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at Delaney Hall in New Jersey earlier this month.
On Monday, Acting US Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba charged the Democratic congresswoman with her actions.
Habba is expected to dismiss trespassing charges against Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who was also at the detention centre.
In a letter posted to Habba’s X account, she announced she charged McIver for “assaulting, impeding and interfering with law enforcement.”
“Representative LaMonica McIver assaulted, impeded, and interfered with law enforcement in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 111 (a)(1),” she wrote.
“That conduct cannot be overlooked by the chief federal law enforcement official in the State of New Jersey, and it is my Constitutional obligation to ensure that our federal law enforcement is protected when executing their duties.”
