Dear Governor Tim Walz, Mayor Jacob Frey, and Every Leader of a Sanctuary City or State:
We The People are urging a reconsideration of policies that limit cooperation between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Specifically, by facilitating the transfer of undocumented individuals already in custody—those convicted of crimes or facing serious charges—to ICE for deportation proceedings, you could significantly reduce the need for ICE agents to conduct enforcement actions in communities and on the streets.
This approach aligns with public safety priorities: it focuses resources on removing individuals who pose risks due to criminal activity, while minimizing disruptions to everyday life in your jurisdictions.
Sanctuary policies, while intended to build trust with immigrant communities, can inadvertently lead to increased federal interventions when local jails release such individuals without notifying ICE. Collaborative efforts, such as honoring ICE detainers for criminal aliens, have proven effective in other areas for enhancing safety without broad sweeps.
We encourage you to explore partnerships that prioritize community well-being and efficient immigration enforcement. Let’s work together to protect our cities and states!
