ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY DECEMBER 17, Trump increased funding for
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by more
than 14%. 👀👀Krystal L. Williams, an
assistant professor at the University of Alabama College of
Education who has studied federal funding of H.B.C.U.s, points
to publicly available data from the Integrated Postsecondary
Education Data System on this matter. The data suggest an
increase of about 6 percent in federal appropriations, grants
and contracts from the 2016-2017 academic year to 2017-2018,
the most recent year for which such data is available.
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY DECEMBER 2018, President Trump signed the
groundbreaking First Step Act, a criminal justice bill that
enacted reforms that make our justice system fairer and help
former inmates successfully return to society.
True. The Trump administration championed these reforms. Credit also goes to criminal justice reform
advocates from across the political spectrum who pushed these
changes for years.
The First Step Act’s reforms addressed inequities in sentencing laws that
disproportionately harmed Black Americans and reformed mandatory
minimums that created unfair outcomes. 👀👀
