Nanette Barragán (D-Calif.) in a heated verbal exchange with a U.S. Capitol Police officer stationed outside the office door. In the clips, Barragán points her finger near the officer’s face while attempting to enter, as he raises a hand to block her and maintains his position. The officer, who is working without pay due to the shutdown (largely blamed on Democratic resistance to Republican funding proposals), shows restraint and does not physically engage beyond the hand gesture. THE LIE… Rep. Barragán’s Statement Following the incident, Barragán spoke to reporters and accused the officer of physical misconduct. She claimed the officer “forcibly grabbed” her arm during the scuffle, stating she planned to request a meeting with a Capitol Police supervisor to address it. In a post-incident interview, she described the encounter as aggressive on the officer’s part, emphasizing that she was exercising her “constitutional duties” as a member of Congress. Barragán’s office has not issued a formal written statement or responded to further media requests for clarification as of October 16, 2025. CAPITOL POLICE RESPONSE… Response from Capitol Police Union The United States Capitol Police Labor Committee (union) pushed back strongly against Barragán’s account. Chairman Gus Papathanasiou called her actions “unacceptable” and commended the officer for “keeping his cool” amid the confrontation. The union suggested Barragán should apologize, viewing her behavior as disrespectful—especially given officers’ unpaid status during the shutdown. Capitol Police confirmed they are reviewing body camera footage but have not declared any security breach or formal complaint at this time.
