It started with a dispute over land. On the one side, a racist family with a history of filing bogus lawsuits to harrass their personal enemies (and the occasional bit of distributing crypto-Nazi periodicals). On the other, a planned highway widening that would take a corner off their land - and open another piece of land for sale to them for the princely sum of $1.
Their clever plan to block the construction? Pretending not to believe the documents authorizing the widening were real. When that approach failed, their fallback plan was violence.
Twenty years ago yesterday, Deputy Danny Wilson was the first victim; Constable Donald McMurray Ouzts was the second.
In the end, the final three victims were the perpetrators - their plan may have delayed construction by a few hours, but it cost them their freedom.
