42 years ago Wednesday, as Officer Ciro Capobianco lay in the hospital - shot the prior day by a Nuclei Armati Rizoluzionari terror cell - the NAR put into motion their plan to divert the police investigation.
Their plan? Murder another police officer, because that would surely distract investigators. Their victim this time around was Carabiniere Romano Radici.
As to why the terrorists thought it would help them for law enforcement to be pursuing them over a murder instead of a shooting (for at the time, Officer Capobianco was still alive)... well, the NAR were neo-fascists, followed the spiritual teachings of the Nazi occultist Julius Evola, and had branched out from bank robbery into the pharmaceutical trade. None of these are conducive to good judgement.
The NAR was disbanded decades ago. However, one of their members is still active in the political lunatic fringe, fleeing to Britain for a time (where he helped his young roommate start another extremist sect), waiting out the statute of limitations for his own crimes there, and returning to found a new fringe party. Another Evolite's attempt to rent an old monastery to train extremists fell through when the documents he presented to show that the rent money was legally obtained turned out to have been written by someone who didn't actually work for the bank the money was at.
The day after officer Radici's murder, offirel Capobianco succumbed to his injuries.
