Guardias di P.S. Carlo Buonantuono and Vincenzo Tumminello were preparing to stop a suspicious car when the occupants opened fire, killing them. A third officer was injured. The shooters later turned out to have been members of the subversive formation "Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari".
The NAR is long dead, but one of their former members remains active in politics. Future Italian politican Roberto Fiore fled Italy to hide out in the UK while he waited out the statute of limitations; there, he was involved with the founder of the BNP.
