Outsiders to "America's Outback" often wonder why some cowboys wear "stovepipe boots." It's not a fashion statement, it's all about living in rattlesnake country. High topped boots are protection against being bitten by a rattlesnake. The only alternative is to wear snake gaiters, which are often cumbersome to wear. It's just easier to wear a stovepipe boot.
