Billy the Buffalo Carving His Notches The free roaming herd of nearly 1,400 bison (buffalo) at Custer State Park is one of the world's largest publicly owned bison herds. Custer State Park isn't the only place in South Dakota with buffalo herds. Right next door is Wind Cave National Park. The Wind Cave buffalo herd is a herd of 250–400 American bison. The Badlands National Park bison herd consists of approximately 1,200 animals and is one of the nation's largest federally managed bison herds.
