Vic Morrow and the children were shooting a scene in which they were supposed to be running from a pursuing helicopter. Special-effects explosions caused the pilot to lose control of the helicopter and crash into the three victims. John Landis, the film's producer, along with others, were tried for involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of the three actors. All defendants were found not guilty.
