********
Answer: During the War of 1812, British forces entered Washington, D.C., burning the Capitol building, which at the time housed the Library of Congress and its 3,000-volume collection of books. Recognizing it would be difficult for Congress to replace the library that had been lost, Thomas Jefferson offered up his large personal library to Congress to help rebuild the collection. Jefferson’s library at the time was considered to be one of the finest in the United States. Congress accepted Jefferson's offer and appropriated $23,950 for his 6,487 volumes.
